Summer activities can cause extra wear and tear on the body and most people will forget to look after two of the most important body parts -- the feet. Following some simple tips can help protect your feet in the summer and all year long:
- Remember to apply sunscreen to feet, especially the tops and fronts of ankles. Don't forget to reapply after being in the water.
- When out of the water, wash and dry feet thoroughly, especially between the toes.
- Avoid passing around athlete's foot and other skin diseases by not sharing towels.
- Take special care of toenails. See your healthcare provider if you have signs of discoloration or infection of the toenails.
- Avoid injuries by wearing shoes that are specific to the activity or sport that you are participating in. Be sure to wear protective footwear, especially when working outside and mowing the lawn.
- Break in new shoes before going on trips where you'll be doing lots of walking. When trying on new shoes, make sure you have on the same socks you plan on wearing with them.
- When walking on the beach or swimming in a lake, be careful about sharp objects that can cut the undersides of feet. Wearing sandals or water shoes at all times is a good way to prevent cuts and other injuries.
- And most importantly, swim, walk, and enjoy the summer!! Walking is the best form of exercise for your feet, and swimming is a great alternative for those suffering from conditions that make other types of exercise painful.
So before heading to the beach or going on vacation this summer remember that summertime activities can be harmful to the feet. Any foot problems should be looked at and treated by a healthcare provider.
